Most seed and potting mixes contain a large percentage of sphagnum peat moss imported from Canada. Peat bogs act as a vital carbon-neutral sink for our planet, absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and helping reduce the presence of this greenhouse gas. Harvesting peat moss not only destroys these reservoirs for carbon but also releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, contributing to climate change. Try to avoid buying soil mixes containing peat moss if possible, or better still, mix your own!
